Do you like using YouTube, Facebook, Google+, Google Mail, Yahoo, Tumblr, Flickr, foursquare, instagram, …?
It's kinda nice how it's totally free and all your friends are using it too. It's nice to see a corporation spending millions of dollars to allow you to socialize and share for free.
Except it's not …when Facebook, Google Mail, or Google+ go down, we get upset at being denied a "free" service. People either forget or fail to understand that there's a small army of developers and engineers keeping that service operational. There's a small city (or more) of datacenters catering to your online needs. These people and resources need to get paid and make a living just like you do.
So if you're not paying them, who is?
Your email in Google Mail is scanned, indexed, and parsed for targeted advertising. Your likes in Facebook are indexed to build a "Social Graph" of your interests and advertisers. Your +1 on Google are shared with your circles and with advertisers, either directly (targeted advertising & word-of-mouth) or as an aggregate (x users love y product).
If you can't figure out the prices on the menu, it's because YOU'RE on the menu… fatten up, enjoy your stay.
