Using Colloquy on my iPad (iOS 3.2.2), iPhone 3GS (iOS 4.0.1) and PowerMac dual G5 to host the Colloquy Bouncer (OS X 10.5.8) …so far, pretty cool! Only reinforcing the fact that we need iOS 4 on the iPad sooner than later, so many API features missing on the iPad. :(

Synchronized my Nokia N810 to own private gpg keyserver!

Very cool! …Got the Nokia N810 WiMAX Edition on the Sprint Overdrive along with 4 of my co-workers. Got all our gpg keys synchronized to our own gpg keyserver and imported on my Nokia N810. I’m now able to sign and encrypt all our internal traffic…

Using the Nokia N810 WiMAX Edition with Sprint 4G (WiMAX via Sprint 3G/4G Overdrive) in front of Union Station in Washington, DC…

Rather than using internal WiMAX chipset on N810WE, I paired it with my Sprint 3G/4G Overdrive. This morning I secure copied (scp) screenshots to my dedicated server (latheofdreams.com) and connected to EFnet as a WiMAX test.

It’s interesting that Clear/Sprint is really using the Sprint PCS network? /whois identifies my Nokia N810 WiMAX on *.pools.spcsdns.net.

Building a Better Home Server / NAS

Rebuilding the SunFire V20z (click any image to enlarge):

Last night I began configuring OpenIPMI under CentOS 5.5 to allow me to use the Service Processor (SP, known as an Integrated Lights Out [ILO] on other systems) on my SunFire V20z. I can now power up, power down, console in, and check the chassis status of my server remotely. The PowerMac G5 is running Mac OSX 10.5.8 while the SunFire V20z is running CentOS 5.5 with XEN.

By placing the SunFire V20z on the heavy-duty (2200VA) UPS along with the Verizon FiOS router and a 2TB NAS, the goal is to have an encrypted RAID-1 array with dedicated backups, home directories, and storage replacing the earlier RAID-I had on the PowerMac G5.  I’d like to completely image Vicky’s HPtc4400, my ThinkPad X100e, my Fujitsu Lifebook U820, and the PowerMac G5 to the NAS.  I’m looking at getting a 2TB Synology DS209_II SATA NAS as the backbone for this effort.

Maybe one of these days I’ll get a half-height (22U) rack to keep all my servers and network gear in?

Off to a Busy Start on a Monday

Scenes from this morning’s commute… yesterday’s thunderstorms knocked out power to our federal building. I was on call last night, and I logged in remotely (via VPN) from my iPad to bring servers back up this morning. Monday’s just started and it feels like I’ve already worked a full day.

It’s become abundantly clear that I need to:

  1. Reconfigure my office workstation to allow OpenVPN and SSH so that I can connect directly to my office workstation from home once I’ve VPNed in.  Today I was doing my work remotely by logging into our administrative servers and using my /home/foremank from there.
  2. Move the heavy-duty UPS from my SunBlade 1000 in the home office to the corner of the kitchen/dining room, run a Cat-6 to it and the router, install a 2TB RAID-1 Drobo NAS on the same router as the UPS.
  3. Set up MySQL High Availability (HA) between Washington, DC, and Reston, VA, so that we have a hot spare of our MySQL databases and MediaWiki for instances where the power goes out in DC.
