July with the Nest

08 Aug

It's been little over a month since we installed our Nest:

We got our first energy usage report emailed to us.  It's impressive to see how many hours total we used, and the times each day our AC runs.  That this summer has been one of the hottest (most number of days over 95°F) hasn't helped us gauge this year's usage to last.

Several co-workers and I are running one.  Others who've been running their's for longer have been very happy with it.  Mine has rebooted twice, updated 3 times, and learned my habits as I come & go out of the house.

We use a stricter temperature range (68-78°F when away, 73-76°F when home) so it's not able to be as efficient as it could be.  It learns the heating and cooling times for your house size, as well as your schedule, so it tries to run less when away, run only as needed when home, and to throttle the fan so that it runs more than the heating and cooling cycles do.

Looking at our electricity bill, it seems to be working, but it's not as dramatic as it could be if we allowed it to run more efficiently (wider temperature ranges).
