Off to a Busy Start on a Monday

Scenes from this morning’s commute… yesterday’s thunderstorms knocked out power to our federal building. I was on call last night, and I logged in remotely (via VPN) from my iPad to bring servers back up this morning. Monday’s just started and it feels like I’ve already worked a full day.

It’s become abundantly clear that I need to:

  1. Reconfigure my office workstation to allow OpenVPN and SSH so that I can connect directly to my office workstation from home once I’ve VPNed in.  Today I was doing my work remotely by logging into our administrative servers and using my /home/foremank from there.
  2. Move the heavy-duty UPS from my SunBlade 1000 in the home office to the corner of the kitchen/dining room, run a Cat-6 to it and the router, install a 2TB RAID-1 Drobo NAS on the same router as the UPS.
  3. Set up MySQL High Availability (HA) between Washington, DC, and Reston, VA, so that we have a hot spare of our MySQL databases and MediaWiki for instances where the power goes out in DC.

  1. Hey! You are the first person I have seen use the "Publish to WordPress" feature. Nice.

It seems to work pretty nicely. I set up "Publish to WordPress" and "Cross-post Comments" under Wordbooker so that it shares between the two.
